Funky Photos from Fantasy Fest 2019
Every year, Key West becomes a beacon for brave souls willing to don their most daring costumes in the interest of entertainment, creative challenges, pun-induced chuckles and sometimes outright shock value. Such was the case for the 2019 Fantasy Fest celebration, which culminated in the final jewel of the 10 day event, the Bud Light Parade.
I was excited to make this my third year as one of the official photographers covering the event, and while the news guys and PR gals have to sit up in the press scaffold and wait for the revelry to come to them throughout the night, I get to roam freely through the parade route, getting up close and personal with the individuals who build and represent the life of the floats.
In addition to photos of the parade itself, one of my favorite parts of walking Duval Street is getting to document the sheer joy and din of the crowds, as they clamor for beads, tokens, attention, and….yes, the camera pointed their way. I have to say that there’s probably nothing to make you feel cooler as a photographer than to have literally thousands of people either calling out to you to take their picture, or at minimum being enthusiastic about striking a pose when you indicate you’ve noticed them.
