So Many Ways to Get Wedding Photos in a Fortress!

If you’ve ever been to Key West, you know that it’s not a very big place. Roughly 2 miles wide and 4 miles long, with the majority of the weddings happening at just a handful of venues.

“It would be tempting to think that photographers on a small island would quickly tap out on ideas, but necessity is the mother of invention, and when your job is to continually innovate and push yourself to the next level, you have no choice BUT to be creative!”

Here’s an example using not just one Key West wedding venue, but one specific area within the venue, to illustrate my point.

All of these images were captured at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, and specifically are wedding images taken inside and around the fortress itself. (NOTE - there are even MORE areas to shoot in the park, but I wanted to really drive home the point that a limited space really can yield endless possibilities in the right hands)

Shoot it in the day. Shoot it in the night.

Darken the sky. Then let in the light.

Make the architecture part of the picture. Then, make it the space in which another is born.

See the same place from the inside, then the outside.

Spend a few minutes apart. Then, come back together.

Strike a pose. Then take a stroll.

Go high and angle down. Get low and aim up.

Find the Window. And find the Wall.

Shoot underneath. Then on top.

Choose a Corner. Then Choose a Curve.

So, while I’m sure it’s possible for some photographers to get bored shooting the same venues weekend in and weekend out, you can tell pretty quickly when reviewing a photographer’s portfolio whether or not they are stretching themselves creatively in their work. That’s not to say they shouldn’t have consistency…having “go to” spots are a way of maximizing value and not wasting time when you don’t have the luxury of frolicking through the tulips waiting for divine inspiration on a hectic wedding day….but that doesn’t mean you have to have the same wedding photos everyone else has.
