A Whirlwind of Fun and Love: Karen and Curtiss' Key West Wedding

As a wedding photographer, I have the privilege of capturing countless love stories, each unique in its own way. Karen and Curtiss, a couple who recently tied the knot in Key West, Florida, have a love story that radiates with joy, spontaneity, and adventure. Their journey began when fate brought them together in a charming encounter that mirrored the start of a romantic movie.

Karen, a passionate seagrass instructor at FKCC, caught Curtiss' attention while she was "lifeguarding" her students in the lagoon. Curtiss, leading a group of divers, couldn't help but be captivated by Karen's presence. He climbed up the ladder, being careful to avert his eyes given his lower angle, and emerged from the water with a suave flip of his hair, reminiscent of something out of a James Bond film. And just like that, their love story had begun.

An Engagement Worth Celebrating:

The couple shares a deep appreciation for memorable anniversaries, and Goombay held a special place in their hearts. When the event was canceled in 2021, Curtiss took it upon himself to create a unique celebration. He arranged a custom Goombay experience, featuring an intimate dinner in Bahama Village, followed by a breathtaking sunset aboard the Ingham. With a quiet and private proposal, Curtiss presented Karen with a beautiful "field ring" – a symbolic token they could wear during their adventures on the water.

Months later, after collaborating with Karen and a talented jewelry designer, Curtiss planned another surprise proposal on Karen's birthday. The setting was the vibrant Mango's Drag Queen Brunch, where the joyful atmosphere perfectly complemented their love in a celebration filled with laughter, and love.

Welcoming Their Guests in Style

The couple knew that you can’t just invite everyone to Key West without kicking off the weekend in true island style. From sunset cruises to scavenger hunts, they kept busy taking in the sights and local scene that we call paradise, finally culminating in a beautiful Welcome Party the night before the wedding at the historic Key West Lighthouse. I was on hand to capture candids, group shots, and (of course) sunset photos at the top of the lighthouse with the soon-to-be-newlyweds!

Shared Passions and Adventures:

Karen and Curtiss are a couple who truly live life to the fullest. Their shared passions include kayaking through picturesque mangroves, embracing the spirit of costuming during Key West's vibrant festivals, indulging in theatrical performances, immersing themselves in wildlife-watching escapades, exploring Key West's charming streets on bikes, and embarking on unforgettable adventures around the world.

Anticipation for Their Big Day:

Given the already-revelrous nature of the couple, it was no surprise, then, that their wedding day would be one to remember as well! The couple shared that they were most excited about having an incredible time filled with laughter, dancing, and the company of friends from all corners of the world. Their wedding was destined to be a celebration like no other.

A Memorable Venue:

The chosen venue for their joyous occasion was the Truman Little White House, a historical gem nestled in the heart of Key West. This magnificent house served as President Harry S. Truman's winter White House during his presidency. Today, it stands as a testament to the rich history and elegance of the island.

Capturing Precious Moments:

As the wedding photographer, I had the pleasure of documenting every cherished moment of Karen and Curtiss' special day. It all began in the bride's room upstairs, located in the presidential suite of the Truman Little White House. The atmosphere was brimming with excitement as Karen's girlfriends helped her slip into her exquisite wedding gown. Each detail was meticulously attended to, from the placement of her shoes, veil, and jewelry to the playful sprinkling of glitter, adding a touch of magic to the air.

Curtiss, a distinguished member of the Navy, looked immaculate in his white naval uniform, adorned with medals and a gleaming cutlass sheathed at his hip. Every element was picture-perfect, setting the stage for an unforgettable day. A private chauffeur whisked us away in a black presidential antique car, complete with fluttering flags that signaled the couple's love to all those who cheered along the way. We made a stop at the Mile Zero sign, which had gone missing, prompting a bit of Photoshop magic later to restore this cherished photo opportunity.

Key West's Vibrant Spirit:

As we continued our photographic journey, Key West's vibrant spirit accompanied us at every turn. A character on a moped, sporting a boxing ring outfit and playing the theme song to Rocky, added an unexpected touch of whimsy as we captured moments at the Monroe County Courthouse. The iconic Welcome to Key West Postcard mural at Cuban Coffee Queen provided the perfect backdrop, while "Sponge Man" stood proudly, watching over us near Mac's Sea Garden.

An Unconventional and Lively Ceremony:

The ceremony itself was a testament to Karen and Curtiss' lively and nontraditional nature. Before the couple made their entrance, designated "flower men" danced down the aisle, popping confetti and setting the tone for an exuberant celebration. To enhance the magical ambiance, a small orchestral group played enchanting melodies, highlighting the benefits of live music during a wedding ceremony – an experience that adds an unparalleled level of elegance and emotion.

Capturing Timeless Memories:

Following the ceremony, we headed to the front lawn, where we captured group photos with the entire guest list, followed by intimate family portraits. The Truman Little White House provided a picturesque backdrop, underscoring the grandeur and significance of the moment.

An Evening of Celebration:

The reception held in the Truman Little White House was an enchanting affair that exuded vivacity and love. The lively music enticed guests onto the dance floor beneath a shimmering chandelier. Select guests delighted us with their creative attire, and a photo booth allowed everyone to capture spontaneous memories. In a delightful twist, Karen and Curtiss chose to cut a pie instead of the traditional cake, using a military sword with precision and grace.

Throughout the night, sparklers and confetti added bursts of joy and magic. At one point, the couple even added tutus to their wedding attire, elevating the level of fun and revelry. The energy and laughter were infectious, creating an atmosphere that will be etched in our hearts forever.

Well Wishes and Gratitude:

To Karen and Curtiss, may your journey together continue to be filled with love, adventure, and endless joy. It was an honor to be part of your extraordinary day, capturing the essence of your love in every photograph. Cheers to a lifetime of shared memories and cherished moments!

With heartfelt thanks, Karrie Porter - Wedding Photographer
